The Hydrology

HYSTAR Model Runner

0 available USGS watershed sitesAutomatic compute assignment

Prepare watershed inputs, run the model, and retrieve results.

Work from left to right through four clearly separated stages. Prepare the required inputs, optionally configure one or both scenarios, run the model, and then review the results.

Starting the portal. Controls become available when it is ready.

Step 1 of 4 · Input data preparation

Select the watershed and prepare model inputs

Choose a watershed and a modeling period. The rainfall graph checks the forcing period before you continue.

Step 2 of 4 · Scenario analysis

Explore optional land-cover and selected-cell scenarios

Use either analysis by itself or configure both in the same run. Leave both inactive for a baseline simulation.

Land-use and cover scenario

Change one model cell or a drawn area. HYSTAR recalculates CN from the replacement cover and each cell's soil group.

Optional · no change

Enter a U.S. street address inside the selected watershed. The nearest 30 m model cell will be used.

Address lookup: U.S. Census Bureau Geocoding Services.

No land-cover cell or polygon selected

The scenario is applied to a per-job working copy. Original HYSTAR and watershed input files are not changed.

Selected-cell flow path and impact

Trace one model cell to the outlet and quantify its direct-runoff contribution with a controlled rainfall experiment.

Optional · not selected
Start by choosing one of the two impact analyses above. The portal will then guide you to select exactly one model cell.

Watershed map and area selection

Land-cover areas are pink; the independent impact-analysis cell is teal. Both can remain selected.

Loading watershed catalog

The map becomes available as soon as the USGS catalog is ready.

Step 3 of 4 · Model run

Validate and submit the simulation

Required input data must be complete. Scenario analysis is optional, and the scheduler selects the workstation internally.

Step 4 of 4 · Retrieve results

Review hydrographs and download result files

After a completed run, explore direct runoff, baseflow, flow paths, and contribution frequency, then download PNG, CSV, or ASCII files.
